Campus Safety

UIC provides several safety resources and tools on campus, including:

Emergency Notification System

UIC has implemented a text-messaging system, called UIC Alert, to enhance the university’s ability to alert the campus to emergencies such as serious crimes, weather emergencies, and similar incidents. Subscribers to this free service automatically receive brief bulletins to their cell phones or other text message capable devices in the event of an emergency. You can sign up for UIC Alert online. To sign up for this service, you will first need to activate your netid.

UIC Alert augments other forms of communication in the event of an emergency, including urgent massmails sent to UIC e-mail addresses, postings to the Emergency Information Web page, and recorded announcements left on the emergency information line at (312) 413-9696.

Emergency Contact Information

We encourage you to update the emergency contact information in your student record so campus officials can get in touch with the appropriate people quickly and easily in the case of an emergency situation.

To update your emergency contact information online:

  • Go to my.UIC.edu.
  • Log in with your netID and password.
  • Select the “Academics” tab, then select “Records.”
  • Select “Change your Emergency Contact Information including Mental Health Contact and Primary Contact if Missing.”
  • Select the “Emergency Contacts” and then “New Contact” to add your emergency contact information for each person.

Startel Emergency Phones on Campus

There are over 1,000 Startel emergency phones on campus; they are easily identified as 8-foot blue light poles. The red call button activates an alarm and flashing light and immediately connects you to UIC Police.

UIC SAFE app

The UIC SAFE app is a a free personal security tool that provides users with added safety on campus. Features include Friend Virtual Walk, which enables you to share your location with friends and family in real-time while walking, as well as direct and easy contact with dispatchers and first responders in case of emergencies.

SafeWalk Police/Student Patrol Escort

Students can call (312) 996-2830 to request an escort to walk them to their campus destination.

UIC Night Ride

UIC offers students and staff a nighttime transportation service, UIC Night Ride, that will pick up and drop off riders within a specific coverage area in and around the campus. All riders need a valid UIC i-card to board. The service operates 365 days a year, daily between 11 p.m. – 7 a.m.
